Colossians 1:11 - being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience
This is a favorite of mine and I am always seeking great endurance and patience, in all things that I do.

Flu Then Ending 1.27.13
Monday - 22 miles, NB 110 - I was still feeling some lingering flu weakness and this run kind of drug on until about 12 or 13 miles but then I was able to hammer out the last part of it.
Tuesday - 45 min stairs - Legs were pretty heavy after yesterdays run
Wednesday - 45 min stairs
Thursday - Off
Friday - Gym - Bench, Press, Squat, Dead - I don't like doing all four lifts on the same day but that is how my schedule worked out this week. I was fading towards the end but still managed to pull my heaviest Dead to date.
Saturday - 10 miles (8 miles NB 101, 2 miles barefoot)
Sunday - 8 miles (6 miles NB 110, 2 miles barefoot)
Total - 40 miles and 1.5 hours of stairs
The flu really set me back and I only managed to eek out 10 miles total the week before this week. I was glad to sneak in the 22 miler early in the week and then kind of just take it easy and confirm that I was 100% over the flu. I'm looking at 5 more weeks until I start my taper for Grasslands and have a plan that I hope will work. I've got some time built up at work and will be able to get away 3 or 4 times over the next month to do long runs. I plan to do a long run of 24 miles this coming week, then 26 miles the next, then a down week, then 28 miles, and then close out things with a 30 miler.

lot of this run was done in ankle deep snow
Thursday – Lifting – Finally made it back to the gym after

Dead – obviously it wasn’t optimal to do all 4 lifts on the same day, but it
was going to be another week or so before I could get back in the gym.

Saturday - 22 miles, MT 110 - I was pretty sure on Friday that I was coming down with something and really felt it before this run but was able to grind this one out. Then the rest of the day was spent in bed with full on Flu.
Sunday - Sick w/ Flu
A pretty relaxing stretch with not a whole lot of running. The holidays are always a good excuse to relax and not run and the flu working its way through our family didn't help either. Our daughter was the first to come down with it back before Christmas and it ever so slowly worked its way through all of us. I thought that maybe I had escaped catching it but no such luck. I'll spend the next couple of days trying to get well and then ease back into running.
I always try to drink local and had a few of these over the last 3 weeks:

Sunday - 6 miles
Monday - 8 miles, NB MT 101, it was cold!
Tuesday - AM Gym - Bench / Squat, PM - 4 miles, NB MT 110
Wednesday - 30 min Stairs
Thursday - 0 - crazy day at work and then daughter was throwing up in the evening
Friday - AM Gym - Press / Dead, PM - 4 miles
Saturday - 14 miles, 10 miles Luna Sandals / 4 miles BF - This was a really nice run
Sunday - 0 - I woke up today and my left foot was bothering me just enough to not push things but not so much as to worry me.
Total - 46 miles and 30 min stairs
I've been easing back into things after taking nearly two weeks off to try and let my left foot right itself. I'm pleased with the progress and will try to get in an actual speed workout in tomorrow after work. I'm continuing to make progress with my lifting and have started to turn my sights to a 300 lb Dead.

I've Been Off
I'm currently wrapping up my longest break from running in probably a year or more. I decided to take a break when my left foot just refused to stop bothering me. I tried running in shoes for a week but even that extreme measure wasn't enough. I was really starting to worry that I had obtained a stress fracture at some point but things seem to be nearly 100% after a little over a week off. I plan to get back to running tomorrow and jump right back into things. I'll probably scratch Bandera 100k from my schedule and make Cowtown 50k my next race.
One benefit of not running was that I was able to get in 4 lifting sessions. I am finally getting comfortable with deadlifts and am really starting to increase the weight that I am lifting.

A Week in Shoes and Sandals
I failed to mention an unusual occurrence in yesterdays post - I ran every mile last week in some form of footwear. That is the first time that this has happened since I lived back in the DC area and started the transition to barefoot / minimalist running. The pain in my left foot necessitated this and it was rather refreshing. I'm by no means a barefoot zealot or purist. I view barefoot running as a tool that has made me a better runner. I'll be back running barefoot as soon as my foot will allow me and I won't be falling in love with shoes anytime soon. However, Doom does have a love affair with shoes and this is probably the song he would dedicate to them:

Week Ending 11.25.12
Monday - AM - Gym: bench, press, squat, deads, PM - 4 miles, MT 101
Tuesday - AM - 30 min stairs, PM - 4 miles, MT 101
Wednesday - 30 min stairs
Thursday - 0 - Family, food, fun, etc
Friday - 10 miles, MT 110
Saturday - 10 miles, Luna Sandals
Sunday - 4 miles, MT 101
Total - 32 miles plus 1 hr stairs
My left foot and calf are still bothering me, more so the foot at this point. I tweaked this foot way back in October on a fishing trip. I slipped on a rock crossing a river and wedged my foot between two other rocks and it never felt totally right after that. Then I proceeded to kick the crap out of a rock with that same foot at the Rockledge Rumble 50k. I keep trying to convince myself that it is a soft tissue or ligament injury but the specter of a stress fracture is starting to creep into my mind.
I'm trying to clear my mind with a NOLA Hopitoulas IPA.
